Meet K2 Pro Rider Jessica Fromm-Comte
Ever since Jessica Fromm-Comte graduated from high school she's been snowboarding every season. With Swedish sponsors she's now riding in Sweden, and is one of the coaches at the Girlie and Brotherhood camps.
How come you started snowboarding?
- When I moved to Sweden snowboarding was new to me since I grew up in Paris. I started riding in one of the slopes in Stockholm. Every weekend at first, but soon also after school 3-4 days a week. Then I started competing. But it wasn't until I started Tärnaby snowboarding school that the real journey began. That's when I learned how to really ride, to ride the pipe and to jump.
Why snowboarding?
- It was love at first sight. It's hard to explain. I have thought about to start working as "normal people" do, but I just can't do it. This is what I love, and feel really good doing.
Is it always fun?
- Sure you have hard days when it's - 20 degrees and windy, or if you're injured. Then you start to ask yourself if it's worth it? But those thoughts disappear somehow. And what you remember are the good days, which makes it so, so worth it. Not everybody get to experience what I experience. I feel like I live a luxurious life since I get to do what I love.
Could you describe a day that was really, really good?
- There are so many! When I won the world cup was one of those days. I never thought it could happen. I was in the hospital three weeks earlier and dreamed of it. Three weeks later I found myself as the winner. I'll always remember that feeling. And one time in the US there was a really big jump that no one dared to jump in. Not even the americans themselves. But I did it. The feeling that I had in the air in that jump... It's the best jump of my life.
What makes snowboarding special?
- It's the adrenaline rush you get from riding with your friends. When you feel like nothing can go wrong and there's nothing you can't do.
When did you decide to be a snowboarder?
- I remember it so well. It was the year before I started riding, when Ingemar Backman won in Riksgränsen and broke the world record. I read about it in the papers and thought to myself "I want to be that good too".
What inspires you?
- I'm inspired by my dreams. They make me want to be better and always try a little harder. And to try new stuff I've dreamed of doing gets me out of bed again and again. I also get inspired by friends and other really good snow boarders.
Who are your role models?
- I've never been a person who idolises people. But I look up to riders like Shaun White and Kelly Clark.
What do you dream of right now?
- Sunny days and soft riding in the slopes.
What can those who snowboard with you as their coach expect?
- Snowboarding should always be fun, and nothing is impossible. We ride and have fun. If there is something someone wants to try I see to that they try it before they leave the camp. You can always try things on your own level. If you want to try to jump you could start on a bump in the slope for example.
