Desiree Bilon
Camp Director Surf
What's your story?
I live in a small town on the pacific coast of Mexico. I grew up in Canada skiing and snowboarding but surfing for me was something altogether different. I have been hooked since the first time I went surfing.
I have been surfing for eight years now, and instructing for five. Surfing has taken me to many different countries and provided me with many truly amazing experiences. I have had the chance to work at and organize some great surf events as well as write articles for a couple of surf magazines.
What does your sport mean to you?
Surfing is my life. It is my way of connecting with nature and with myself. My goal is to surf until I am 75.
What's your best memory from your sport?
I have so many wonderful memories from surfing; it is difficult to choose the best one. One of the most memorable times I had surfing was a couple of years ago in Baja California. I had already gotten out of the water and my brother told me to go back in because he was taking photos and the sun was going down so the light was perfect. I followed his advice and went back in and I ended up catching one of the biggest waves of my life.
What do you think about GirlieCamps?
I first worked with GirlieCamps in 2005 in Viareggio, Italy. At the time, I had just taken my Level 1 Surf Instructor's Course with Surfing Australia/ISA (International Surfing Association) and I was doing my practicum. I was only supposed to work for two days and ended up working the whole week. It was such a wonderful opportunity to spend time with like-minded girls who wanted to surf. There is nothing better than knowing that I played a role in inspiring a girl to pursue her dream of surfing.
What do you wanna say to all the Girlies out there?
Come surfing with us, your life may change forever.
